Tan Zhi Yong
ZhiYong Tan (Yong Tan) is a Malaysia-based composer, arranger and performer, currently studying music composition in West Chester University of Pennsylvania (class of 2022). He enjoys writing instrumental music, electronic music, vocal work, and song. Yong Tan believes that music can not only carry emotion, but also information. Therefore, his composition often express issue such as environmental issue, social issue like racism, psychology disorder and more.
Yong Tan’s compositions have been performed publicly in the US and Malaysia. He has received commission for new composition and arrangement for solo, chamber, and orchestra. May 2021, his composition for woodwind quintet has won the Pennsylvania Chamber Winds Call for Score. In high school, he has been appointed as wind orchestra conductor and class choir conductor. He has received awards including best choir conductor and best arranger for choir. Yong also has experience of holding a two-hour concert for wind orchestra. Besides, he has been playing saxophone and piano for more than 12 years. He enjoys playing music from many different genres including classical, jazz and pop.
