Jellal Koay
Koay Loong Chuen (better known as Jellal Koay, b. 2001) is a Malaysian pianist-composer. He started to take basic piano lessons at the age of 11 under the tutelage of Ms. Kwan Yin Hui. He served as the choir accompanist for the choir of SMK Seri Kembangan, during which the choir had won a Silver Diploma at the Malaysia International Choral Festival (MICF) 2016 and at the Malaysian Choral Eisteddfod (MCE) National Choir Competition in 2018. After graduating, he served as the music arranger and assistant instructor of the same choir. As a solo pianist, he was a finalist for the Southeast Asia International Piano Competition 2020 in young artist category.
Jellal also taught himself songwriting and composition, where he wrote and arranged music prior to his music studies in college. In 2019, he began taking composition as his second study with the Malaysian composer Dr. Wong Chee Wei as his mentor. As a student composer, he won several awards such as the 1st Prize for Solo Harmonica & Orchestra Category in the Hong Kong International Composition Competition for Chromatic Harmonica 2021, 2nd Prize for Brass Trio category at The Diversity Initiative Call for Scores, and featured composer in the Malaysian Patriotic Music Composition Competition 2019. He had also participated in the Virtual Manila Composers’ Lab 2020 and the Malaysian Young Composers’ Workshop 2021.
