Choke Yuan Teng
Born and raised in Malaysia, Choke Yuan Teng is a composer who emerged from a background of multiple cultures.
Yuan Teng is the winner of the 2015 Modern Poet Composition Contest in Malaysia, with her work “Janji Demokrasi” for soprano and piano. She is also the finalist of the 2019 Free Hand Festival in Malaysia, with her work "The Woodcutter's Song". She has also been involved in various new music events and festivals including the SoundBridge Contemporary Music Festival in Malaysia, Manila Composers Lab in the Philippines, and the Darmstadt Summer Course in Germany.
Yuan Teng’s work has been performed by ensembles from around the world, including Young Choral Academy Choir (Malaysia), DSCH Quartet (Malaysia), Sirius Quartet (U.S.), Ripieno Ensemble (Philippines), as well as and soloists including Ng Teck Hing (Malaysia), Max Riefer (Germany), Tord Hagbarth Bremnes (Norway), Saori Nakazawa (Japan), Kei Yamazawa (Japan), and Chi Him Chik (Hong Kong).
As a composition student of Neo Hup Hiang and Yii Kah Hoe, Yuan Teng studied at Malaysian Institute of Art (MIA) and is now pursuing her Bachelor’s Degree at the University of Arts Bremen in Germany with Daniel Smutny and Prof. Jörg Birkenkötter.
